چکیده

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a data-driven non-parametric approach for measuring the efficiency of a set of decision making units (DMUs) using multiple inputs to generate multiple outputs. Conventionally, DEA is used in ex post evaluation of actual performance, estimating an empirical best-practice frontier using minimal assumptions about the shape of the production space. However, DEA may also be used prospectively or normatively to allocate resources, costs and revenues in a given organization. Such approaches have theoretical foundations in economic theory and provide a consistent integration of the endowment-evaluation-incentive cycle in organizational management. The normative use, e.g. allocation of resources or target setting, in DEA can be based on different principles, ranging from maximization of the joint profit (score), combinations of individual scores or game-theoretical settings. In this paper, we propose an allocation mechanism that is based on a common dual weights approach. Compared to alternative approaches, our model can be interpreted as providing equal endogenous valuations of the inputs and outputs in the reference set. Given that a normative use implicitly assumes that there exists a centralized decision-maker in the organization evaluated, we claim that this approach assures a consistent and equitable internal allocation. Two numerical examples are presented to illustrate the applicability of the proposed method and to contrast it with earlier work. ! 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A sequence of targets toward a common best practice frontier in DEA

Original data envelopment analysis models treat decision-making units as independent entities. This feature of data envelopment analysis results in significant diversity in input and output weights, which is irrelevant and problematic from the managerial point of view. In this regard, several methodologies have been developed to measure the efficiency scores based on common weights. Specificall...

Allocating fixed costs and resources via data envelopment analysis

In this paper we first (trivially) show that data envelopment analysis can be viewed as maximising the sum of the efficiencies of the decision-making units (DMU's) in the organisation. Building upon this we present nonlinear models for: (a) allocating fixed costs to DMU's and (b) allocating resources to DMU's. Simultaneous to allocating resources output targets are also decided for each DMU. Nu...

Allocating the Fixed Resources and Setting Targets in Integer Data Envelopment Analysis

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a non-parametric approach to evaluate a set of decision making units (DMUs) consuming multiple inputs to produce multiple outputs. Formally, DEA use to estimate the efficiency score into the empirical efficient frontier. Also, DEA can be used to allocate resources and set targets for future forecast. The data are continuous in the standard DEA model whereas th...

Fixed cost and resource allocation based on DEA cross-efficiency

In many managerial applications, situations frequently occur when a fixed cost is used in constructing the common platform of an organization, and needs to be shared by all related entities, or decision making units (DMUs). It is of vital importance to allocate such a cost across DMUs where there is competition for resources. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) has been successfully used in cost an...

A Non-radial Approach for Setting Integer-valued Targets in Data Envelopment Analysis

Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) has been widely studied in the literature since its inception with Charnes, Cooper and Rhodes work in 1978. The methodology behind the classical DEA method is to determine how much improvements in the outputs (inputs) dimensions is necessary in order to render them efficient. One of the underlying assumptions of this methodology is that the units consume and prod...
